Going back to one!

Hollywood's renaissance requires addressing its "old story."

The film of tomorrow will be an act of love. François Truffaut, 1957

Back to One

For the last century, film has perpetuated four harmful and specific falsehoods to further an agenda—an agenda designed to see people as two genders rather than one human race.

This has cemented limitations into the very foundations of our culture—limitations that restrict the kinds of stories we can successfully tell. In a business driven by reproduction and mass appeal, these limitations are not conducive to quality filmmaking.

Classical Hollywood Cinema Myths:

  • Men and women cannot be friends.

  • "Champion" is a gendered term.

  • Romantic love is the most important love.

  • Kids don’t know themselves.

François Truffaut once said that great films create a perfect illusion. But at some point, the film must pierce that illusion and depict reality.

As artists, it’s our responsibility to use the tools of illusion to reflect our lived experiences. We are storytellers, not myth-makers. It is our duty now to (re)create worlds where the facts exist:

  • Friendship has no gender.

  • Anyone can be a champion.

  • Love, in all its forms, matters.

  • Kids know far more about themselves than we give them credit for.

Back to One is an initiative that seeks funding for original stories, steeped in Classical Hollywood traditions, but use truth as their foundation. Help us correct the blueprint so future generations can tell their stories—authentically and without limitation.
